What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are small, thin porcelain shells that can be layered onto the teeth, creating the appearance of beautifully uniform teeth. Veneers are capable of addressing just about any aesthetic issue you could have with your teeth, from minor cracks to major misalignment, with just a single treatment.

The high-quality porcelain they’re constructed makes them realistic, durable, and resistant to stains.

The Process of Getting Veneers

As with any cosmetic procedure, we’ll first bring you in for a consultation in order to talk to you about what kind of treatment would be best. If we settle on veneers, we’ll prepare your teeth for the cosmetic by removing a small portion of your enamel, then will take an impression of your teeth in order to assist with the design of the cosmetics.

These designs will be sent to a dental laboratory, where they will be meticulously crafted to fit your smile. In the meantime, you’ll wear a series of temporary veneers in order to protect the teeth. Once they’ve been completed, we’ll bring you back into our office to put the cosmetics in place. You’ll be able to leave our office with a brand-new smile, one that you can plan to be truly proud of.

Veneers are stain resistant, shockingly realistic, and can be customized to give you a smile that you can take real pride in. If you’re interested in seeing everything that this treatment could do for you, give us a call and we’ll be happy to bring you in for a consultation.

Veneer FAQs

What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

After learning that veneers are bonded to the front-facing surface of your teeth, you might be wondering what happens after that. Can they still develop cavities? Are they now immune to dental damage? The good news is that this cosmetic dental procedure doesn’t increase your risk of tooth decay, and you can keep both your veneers and your pearly whites in pristine condition by implementing good dental care habits (i.e., flossing consistently, keeping your consumption of sugar to a minimum, getting a dental checkup and cleaning twice a year).

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

There aren’t any foods that you’ll need to completely eliminate from your diet following your smile transformation, but there are a few that increase your risk of a chip, crack, or fracture. Peanut brittle, tortilla chips, and hard candies are a few examples. It’s also a good idea to indulge in drinks with alcohol sparingly since they can weaken the bonding material holding your veneer in place. Simply put, it’s best to opt for nutrient-dense foods that are softer in consistency when possible, like cooked broccoli, kiwi, plain yogurt, and oatmeal.

Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Since veneers are made from stain-resistant materials like porcelain, you won’t have to worry about them quickly discoloring. In other words, you can still drink coffee and other dark-colored beverages! Just make sure to use a straw to protect stubborn stains from surfacing on the rest of your teeth.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

To help you determine the answer, we need to know a bit about your smile goals. After all, it’s rare for two patients to have the exact same aesthetic preferences and dental imperfections they want to fix. If you’re unhappy with your smile because of a noticeable chip on one of your front teeth, then it’s possible that you may only need one veneer. If you want a more dramatic transformation that addresses chips, gaps, stains, and the like, then we may recommend 8-12.

Can You Whiten Veneers?

No, you cannot whiten veneers with over-the-counter kits or professional brightening treatments. The reason why is that they aren’t crafted from enamel; they are crafted from dental materials like porcelain.

Note: If you want your veneers to be a lighter color, then schedule an appointment with us to discuss your treatment options. Make sure to use a straw when drinking coffee, brush and floss consistently, and get a dental checkup and cleaning twice a year to prevent any existing discoloration from worsening too.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

Veneers can last anywhere from 5-15 years – it depends largely on how you care for your smile! That’s why we encourage our patients to do the big things, like floss consistently, as well as the little things, like not using their teeth as tools to open things.
