Dentures are a lifechanging tooth replacement option for people who have experienced extensive tooth loss. They can provide patients with the function and appearance of a complete smile. To keep them in good condition for as long as you can, it’s crucial that you are taking all of the proper steps to care for them. This includes avoiding bad habits that can damage your dentures. Here are some things that you should avoid.

Nail Biting

Biting your nails can be problematic for many years, but it is even worth when you have dentures. Since the material used to make dentures isn’t as strong as natural tooth enamel, it is easy to accidentally chip or damage them. This is a difficult habit to give up, but there are some tricks out there that can help. Try carrying a stress ball or getting a manicure to dissuade you from biting your nails.

Chewing Gum

While sugar-free gum is okay for natural teeth, it can easily stick to dentures. If you like to use gum to freshen your breath after meals, we recommend that you choose sugar-free mints to suck on instead. Another option is using mouthwash.

Sleeping with Dentures

Who shouldn’t wear your dentures at all times. It’s best to take them out at bedtime. Clenching and grinding during the night can wear down your dentures quickly. Wearing dentures also restricts blood flow to the gums, so it is best to give them some time to breathe. Every night before bed, you should take out your dentures, clean them, and keep them in a soaking solution until the morning.

Leaving Out Your Dentists

It is important to give your mouth a break from your dentures now and again, but you should still wear them every day. If you accidentally leave them out on your bathroom counter, they can dry out, leaving your dentures warped or cracked. By staying in the habit of wearing your dentures or keeping them in a soaking solution, you will always know where they are.

Skipping Cleaning Sessions

Just because you no longer have your natural teeth doesn’t mean that you don’t need to regularly clean them. By rinsing and brushing your dentures after meals and soaking them overnight, you can keep them from looking and feeling their best. It is also important to gently clean your gums, tongue, cheeks, and palate to prevent oral health issues from arising.

If you are taking the time to care for them, your dentures can stay in optimal shape for much longer. By avoiding the bad habits listed above, you can enjoy showing off a complete smile for many years down the road.
