Continue reading to learn what different kinds of tooth pain might mean and when to see your dentist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sharp or Stabbing Pain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A sudden, sharp pain in your tooth usually signals a problem with your enamel or the nerves beneath. While not every case is an emergency, it\u2019s better to be safe than sorry. Common causes of this kind of pain include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cavities:<\/strong> Decay that has reached the inner layers of your tooth can trigger pain due to inflammation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cracked or Chipped Teeth:<\/strong> A break in your enamel exposes the sensitive areas within to bacteria, leading to an infection that causes discomfort.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tooth Sensitivity:<\/strong> Worn enamel or gum recession can make teeth more sensitive to hot, cold, or sweet foods temporarily.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Throbbing or Pulsing Pain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re facing throbbing tooth pain, your pearly white is likely infected or inflamed. In that case, it\u2019s best to see your dentist as soon as possible, especially if your ache gets distracting. You&#8217;ll otherwise have to live with one (or more) of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>An Abscessed Tooth:<\/strong> A bacterial infection in the root can cause swelling, pus buildup, and severe pain that can turn deadly if left untreated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gum Infection:<\/strong> Inflamed or infected gums can lead to deep, radiating discomfort in your whole mouth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sinus Pressure: <\/strong>Sinus infections or allergies are often mistaken for toothaches because of the pressure they can create in the upper jaw.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dull, Persistent Ache<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A constant, mild \u201cachy\u201d feeling isn\u2019t usually a sign of a dental emergency, but it shouldn\u2019t be ignored, either! This type of pain could stem from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Teeth Grinding (Bruxism):<\/strong> Clenching or grinding your teeth, especially at night, can wear down enamel and strain jaw muscles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impacted Wisdom Teeth:<\/strong> Pressure from unerupted wisdom teeth can cause a lingering discomfort until they\u2019re addressed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mild Tooth Decay:<\/strong> Early-stage cavities may cause a dull ache before progressing into more severe pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with this knowledge at hand, it can still be difficult to know when you should see a dentist. But, when in doubt, go ahead and schedule an appointment! While occasional sensitivity isn\u2019t always an emergency, lingering or severe pain should never be ignored.
